Sri Lanka becomes the first country in South Asia to provide full nationwide mobile 4th generation (4G) network for the Smartphone and other similar hand held devices.
Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission said they had allocated the airwaves to Sri Lanka's largest mobile phone service provider Dialog Axiata for LKR 26.25 million on Thursday.
Dialog, the Sri Lanka unit of Malaysia's Axiata, is expected to roll out 4G mobile network that will allow users to download and upload content to the Internet at speeds 4 to 5 folds faster than the currently available 3G network. Mean while some of the mobile phone carriers in Sri Lanka is currently offering 3.75G for their mobile phone customers.
Sri Lanka already has fixed-line telephone 4G in key cities which is being provided by Dialog, but the new mobile 4G network will allow users to access high speed Internet with their Smartphone and hand held devices through out the country.
It is important to take note that Sri Lanka became the first country in South Asia to introduce mobile phones in the year 1989 and the first to roll out a 3G network in 2004 for the users.
Mean while the usage of 4G devices are not much higher in number in Sri Lanka where most people are still using 2G and 3G enabled mobile phones through out the Island.
A 3G network used to offer peak speeds of at least 0.2 Mb/s.
4G network offer peak speeds of 100 Mb/s (While the customer is inside of a bus, car or train and 1000 Mb/s speed while at a table or during walking.
