When Returning From Sri Lanka What To Do The SIM and The Mobile Phone?

Many travelers to Srilanka use to buy a new mobile phone and new connection (SIM Card) for easy calling and to receive calls rather than using their own phone and connection from their country as it will work in the roaming mode. The mobile phone working in the roaming mode may give a bigger bill once they return home.

When buying a new SIM card it will be under your identity. So if some one makes an abusive call to another person using your SIM connection, then it will be counted as the call was made by you or an abusive SMS is sent from that SIM connection then the authorities will assume that it was done by you.

So to prevent like these problems when you are returning back to your home from Srilanka don't present the SIM card to any one known to you unless you take that person to the near by dealer and change the ownership of the SIM card.

The mobile phone and the charger can be or sold to any person you like with out any trouble. But you must provide the original purchase paper to the person who is buying or getting it as a present from you.

When giving away the mobile phone don't forget to

  1. Delete all your contact details
  2. Clean all your captured images
  3. Clean all the stored SMS and MMS.
  4. Remove SIM card and Memory card, if have any

You can take back the SIM card with you to your country and can bring it back with you when you are visiting Sri Lanka on another trip.

It is illegal for a person to use a SIM card in Sri Lanka that was registered on another person's name. The violator can be prosecuted under the Sri Lanka law.
