New Procedure To Issue SIM Cards.

As per the Sri lanka Governments' request The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has requested all the Sri Lanka mobile phone carriers to issue SIM cards to thier customers with proper verification. They were told to ask thier customers to duly fill an application form and to receive a photocopy of the National Identity Card of the owner who wants to have a new SIM card.

This is to curb SIM based frauds and crimes, according to the Cabinet Spokesman and Minister, Gayantha Karunathilaka recently.

This proposal had been made by the President Maithripala Sirisena to issue an order by the relevant Minister under the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Act. No 25 of 1991, and to assign the authority of implementing this process to the TRCSL.

Further more he said,
"It has been observed that there are a large number of active SIM cards issued by various mobile phone service providers that were issued without proper documentation or identity of their subscribers," It is essential to register them properly for controlling various crimes and frauds using mobile phones, and for the public security.
