Sri Lanka Public Phones

Sri Lanka is offering good public phone service to its citizens and the tourists with latest technology. It is sad to watch the decline of the public phones in Colombo City. These public phones are fitted in important places where people gather (Malls, Railway station, Bus stands, Markets and Airports) and at street corners. They allow you to make calls as local or IDD calls with HD quality. These public phones can be operated by inserting required coins or by inserting the prepaid phone cards. Also these phones allow you to send SMS text messages to local phones and international phones too at small price. If you are a traveler coming on a tour package, at the Colombo International air port you can find public phones that will allow you to make free calls to your local contacts within the airport. Just dial the desired number and it will be connected free of charge and you can continue to make the call for free.

In the meantime usage of public phones had decreased rapidly in Sri Lanka. Here are the reasons. Most of the people have Mobile phones with them. Vandals damagin the public phone system. Companies that are running the Public phones are not repairing the system. Now a days you can see lot of public phones are damaged or missing handsets.

Due to Smartphone and mobile phone's popularity and their affordable price of them had made the general public to turn away from public phones. In Sri Lanka nearly all the people have their own cell phone. So they use it using their cheap mobile phone packages along with Mobile Data Plan to call their relatives and friends. But they use public phones when they need to contact a person through land line. Because the mobile phone to land line call is an expensive one. So in conclusion that the public phone booth usage is becoming very low in Sri Lanka.

If you are an outward passenger going through the Colombo international airport keep some LKR 2/-, 5/- and Rs 10/- coins with you. Once you have passed the Immigration check, at the departure lounge you can find public phones that can be used to make calls with the coins you have in possession. Also at the Colombo international airport you can use your iPhone or other Smartphones to connect through the freely available Wi-Fi connection to make internet calls to your friends and relatives. It may be your passport number as password or contact the nearest help desk to get connected.

In Srilanka many phone cards are available at different prices that can be used with the public phones and privately owned phone booths. Some phone cards are special to make IDD calls through them and can be recharged with the selling carrier. Mean while there are thousands of private communication centers that are located on the entire main streets too used to provide phone call service to the public. They keep phone booths in their establishments with digital meters showing ongoing phone tariff.
